There are some important accessories that dog raisers need when taking the pet out in the street for walking. A dog leash and collar are one of the most essential tools you require. The law requires using a leash and collar in many places when taking the dog out. However, with such a variety of options available, choosing the right product can be difficult. It is often overwhelming to get the perfect collar for your dog and using it the right way to exercise complete control on the activity.
Simple Leash and Collar
If you don’t find problems during the walk, this is a great accessory to use. It lets you keep your pet by your side and out of any danger’s way. This is recommended for balanced, easy going dogs who don’t tend to disobey the masters.
Flat Collar
Almost all dog raisers are aware of flat collar as it is the most popular type of collar and the standard one. Flat collars never pull, lunge or misbehave in a way that gets the dogs injure themselves or their masters. Every dog can walk well on a flat collar without any issues. An advice is not to pull the leash to get the dog’s attention as it can teach him to pull back, making the flat collars ineffective.
Pros: Convenient on the neck if used well.
Cons: If the dogs pull on leash, they can choke without knowing.
Head Collar
Similar to a horse halter, a head collar slips over the snout of the dog and attaches behind the ears.
Pros: It can effectively redirect the dog’s attention and prevents him from pulling back. Has a control on the dog making him calm and walking safely on the road.
Cons: If not used with care, it can jerk the dog’s head. Many dogs will resist putting it on and try to get it off. It can also damage the dog’s fur on the face gradually.
Slip Collar
The training lead tool can be a great accessory to correct misbehaviors if you have a dog with problems during the walk. Such a collar allows instant corrections and gets your dog back on the track if he is distracted by other dogs, squirrels or other factors like a strong gust of wind.
It is possible to give a firm, quick sideways on this leash. Pulling the dog straight backwards gets him pull against you. Instead, you can give a quick tug to a side to knock him off the balance and grab his attention. Remember to take care of your dog’s safety while giving corrections. If you don’t know how to use the tool, you can ask somebody at the store or contact the local professional.
Dog Harnesses
Dog harnesses come in two major categories – front-clip harness is where the leash attaches to the chest while back-clip harness has the leash attached to the dog’s back. Most of modern day harnesses feature both of these.
Back-Clip Harness
Pros: Comes with a tension knot on the neck. Ideal for short-nosed varieties like Boston Terriers or Pugs.
Cons: Allows the dogs to pull hard, hurting their back and making it difficult to control.
Front-Clip Harness
Pros: If the dog starts pulling or straining, it redirects him towards you so that you can steer him. You can control the dog better without having to strain his back.
Cons: Can pull but not so hard.
