August 9, 2014-Reisterstown , MD – On Saturday, August 9, Baltimore’s dogs will smell like roses! Baltimore Humane Society is holding a dog wash! Anyone is welcome to bring their dog for a thorough cleaning. The fee for each dog’s shampoo will help the no-kill shelter raise much needed money for their Yukon Medical Fund, a special fund which helps the homeless shelter animals get much needed medical care.
As a no-kill shelter, Baltimore Humane Society’s policy is to give the medical treatment necessary that homeless animals need to live a happy, full life rather than euthanize them. But the cost of these medical procedures can add up quickly and place a huge financial burden on an already strained budget. Because Baltimore Humane Society receives no operational funding from the government or national humane societies the Yukon Medical Fund was created.
When a pet is surrendered to Baltimore Humane Society’s no-kill shelter, it is given a full medical exam along with vaccinations, spay or neuter, flea and tick treatments, and a microchip. Unfortunately, not all animals come to the shelter in healthy condition. Some are found to have medical conditions that require further diagnostics, advanced medical treatment, and sometimes advanced surgical procedures before they can be adopted out to the community. The cost of these medical procedures can add up into the thousands of dollars quickly.
One dog who most recently received help through the Yukon Fund is Zeppelin. Zeppelin, a dog who loved to run and play, experienced a cruciate injury, also known as an ACL tear. Often a painful and immobilizing injury, Zeppelin had surgery on July 29th costing thousands of dollars to make the repair. In a few months he’ll be up and around and be in excellent shape to find a permanent home. The Yukon Fund is still trying to raise part of the surgical cost for Zeppelin’s surgery.
Your dog can get the full spa treatment when it comes to the Dog Wash including toe nail trimming by Sit, Stay, Style Mobile Groomer. Then reward yourself and your pup with a treat from Tiki’s Playhouse Ice-Cream Truck for Dogs and the Snack Shack.
The Dog Wash takes place from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Baltimore Humane Society on 1601 Nicodemus Road in Reisterstown. It will be on the parking lot by the Administration Building. All pets must be up to date on their vaccinations.
