It’s coming up to that special time of year where lots of people wake up to a new dog on Christmas day. If you’re getting a dog, you have to ensure your home is prepared for it. Here’s what you can do:
Dog-Friendly Flooring
Dogs like to run around a lot, so that can cause problems to your flooring. Some flooring options will scratch and scuff thanks to the dog running on them all day. My advice is to get hard floors that won’t scratch and can stand up to whatever your dog throws at them. Also, it’s not a great idea to get carpet. Carpet will cling to the dog hairs and make it a nightmare for people with allergies. Plus, they’ll absorb the smell of your dog and end up smelling bad.
Make A Place For Them To Sleep
Like any animals, dogs need sleep. In fact, dogs use up so much energy throughout the day, they need loads of sleep! So, prepare for your new dog by making a little sleeping place for them. Go shopping for dog beds and find the perfect one for them. You can place it in a room and then surround it with a food bowl and some dog toys. Make it a comfortable place for them to sleep in. Also, think about getting a little doggy blanket too. Something that you can cover them with so they’re nice and cosy when they sleep. If you want to take things up a level, you can make an indoor dog house for them. Create a lovely little house and put the bed inside it. Then, whenever they’re sleepy, they can go into their new home. It will make them a lot more comfortable, believe me!
Prepare Your Kitchen
The kitchen is a very important room when you have a dog in the house. Typically, this is the room where you’ll store all the food. Dogs have a good sense of smell, so they’ll always try and get in the kitchen and have a sniff around. Make sure you don’t have any food in easy to reach places for a dog. Keep them in cupboards so your dog can’t get to them. This is especially important when talking about foods that are harmful to dogs. Certain foods, like chocolate, are perfectly fine for us to eat. In fact, you probably have lots of chocolate in your house. But, for a dog, chocolate can make them very, very, sick. So keep it away from them. Perhaps you should consider getting a little gate and putting it on your kitchen door. Like a childproof gate, but for a dog instead. It will stop them going into the kitchen and potentially causing themselves harm.
You must take this advice on board if you’re getting a dog for the first time. Preparing your home is important for many reasons. For one, it will keep your dog safe and make sure it doesn’t hurt itself in your home. Also, it means your home won’t get ruined by your dog, and it makes life a lot easier.
