October, 2017 – Reisterstown, MD – A Birthday Bash celebration on Saturday, October 14 will mark the 90th year of Baltimore Humane Society saving lives and a record-breaking year of pet adoptions. Founded in 1927 by philanthropist Elsie Seeger Barton, Baltimore Humane Society has saved, cared for, and re-homed countless numbers of abused, neglected, and homeless animals.
This year, working aggressively to place each animal in a loving, permanent home, the no-kill shelter’s adoption rate steadily reached a 41% increase rehoming 1000 animals in less than a year. Over the last five years the adoption rate has increased by 98%. The number of animals taken in are up 258% this year and up by a whopping 439% since 2013. This has enabled the private, non-profit shelter which normally acquires its animals through owner surrenders, to assist open admission municipal shelters throughout the state and nation by taking transfers and relieving them of their full cages. This increases the region’s ability to save even more neglected, abused, and homeless pets.
Baltimore Humane Society has continued its 90 year old mission through its adoption, foster, volunteer, humane education, and outreach programs. It offers low cost veterinary care so that those who cannot afford regular vet care can still keep their pets. The Bmore Kind Pet Food Bank assists people going through hard times to also be able to keep their pet. The shelter also offers educational programs to school age children, a free monthly grief support group, and a Facebook bereavement support page. Some of its many community programs include Pets for Patriots, Free Adoption for First Responders, Read to the Animals, animal visits to Stella Maris long term care residents, educational outreach programs, and a free pet training class for all dog adopters. Popular events include DogFest, Black Tie & Tails, Pet MemorialSunday, Easter Eggstravaganza, and Holiday Open House.
Baltimore Humane Society strives to be known as a place of care and enrichment to the animals it houses. Staff trainers, agility courses, play yards, a sand pit, and swimming pool are all part of the facility located on a 365 acre wildlife sanctuary. Cats have cat communal rooms, “catios,” and state of the art cat “condos.” The adoption fee at Baltimore Humane Society always includes all vaccinations, spay/neuter, and a microchip.
To celebrate its birthday, Baltimore Humane Society is holding 90th Birthday Bash, a fundraising day of family fun on its grounds. The day includes live music featuring School of Rock amd Shelby Blondell, whose latest single ‘Fun in the Sun’ was #10 on the European Indie Music Charts, fall fun activities, a petting zoo, hayrides, vendors, and food trucks.
Bob Davidson Ford-Lincoln will also be holding its Driven to Give event and will donate $20 to Baltimore Humane Society for each test-drive taken up to $8000. The test-drives are located on the shelter grounds during the Birthday Bash on October 14 from 1pm-6pm.
The public is invited to celebrate with Baltimore Humane Society as it looks forward to another 90 years of saving lives. The no-kill shelter does not receive operational funding from the government or any national animal welfare organization. It relies on the support of the community to keep its doors open.
