Summer is a happy time for everyone, playing outdoors, basking in the sun and enjoying barbeques and cool treats. While you enjoy getting tanned in the sun, don’t forget that your cat needs a little bit of extra care to sail through the hot season.
With their dislike for water and hatred of getting wet, it is a little challenging to keep them cool. Here are a few smart and ‘cat accepted’ tips to keep your dearest pet cool this summer.
- Hydration Of Course
We all know the importance of hydration especially during the summers. But while we humans can grab a glass of water anytime, we want, cats do not have such superpower. So, remember to place plenty of water at different locations in your house and mainly around your cat’s favorite spots. Restock regularly to ensure that they do not avoid water because it’s dirty. You can also put ice cubes in the water to keep it cool for longer period. Additionally, you can give them ice cubes to play with as it’ll keep their paws cool.
- Be Outdoor Prepared
Just like us, our cats also like playing out in the garden or lawn in the open air. Instead of locking them in to keep them safe, there are few things that you can do to ensure their safety while they enjoy playing outdoors. Keep sufficient water outdoors as well. Ensure that there is enough shade in your garden, if not, make arrangements for it because the cats lie down just about anywhere. Note: It is best to avoid letting your kitty out during the afternoon when the sun is soaring, usually between 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Allowing your cat to sit in the sun is dangerous even indoors, even she were to rest in the best cat perch by the window.
- Ice Treats
Ice treat is the best of both worlds for your cat, it will provide nutrition and hydration at the same time. It is so easy to make and yet will do the job perfectly. All you have to do is freeze some tuna brine or chicken stock with water. And viola, perfect summer indulgence for your kitty! They’re going to love it. The best thing about ice treats is that you can do so many experiments with it. Literally anything that your cat likes can be made into an ice treat. If it’s not liquid, just make a paste, add some water and freeze.
- Wet Towel And Ice Packs
Once or twice in a day, dab a wet towel on your cat’s body or just wet your hands and do the same. Do not overdo this step because you want them to catch cold. Prepare some ice packs to be kept near their favorite spots where they sleep the most to give them a cooling effect. Make a point to not wet the whole area as this will only push them away. It’s best to wrap those ice packs in thick clothes. If you want to show your cat some extra love, you can buy cooling mats for pets that are available in the market.
- Occasional Grooming and Visits to The Vet
Not just for pampering, grooming your cat is essential during summers. Their excess fur traps heat so it needs occasional grooming. Also pay regular visits to the vet to ensure that everything is normal and also whenever you notice something different with your cat’s behavior. Heavy breathing, drooling and vomiting are signs of heatstroke so pay attention. If you love your cat, taking care of them feels more like an indulgence than duty, have a look at this great post to read to go that extra mile for your little ball of fur.
Now aren’t you kitty sorted for the summer? So, enjoy the summer, let them play and have fun and take good care of them with these steps.
